bling

I spent most of today at the dentist UPenn Dental School.
The good part is that having gold teeth is kind of awesome, and they feel so slippery and weird in my mouth.  New/fresh/whole.

The bad part is that there was supposed to be another more, but they dropped it down my throat.

I'm not going back.
Real dentists from here on out.  Peace out, Clinic.

deer hold

I have a problem with either holding onto too much stuff, or getting rid of too much.  (Not so much the second part, because now that I'm thinking about it, there's not anything ever that I feel sad I got rid of.  Which is motivating and informing my choices this month, as we move).
ANYWAY, I kept holding onto this backpack.  For years now.  I always thought, "That is not my taste.  That will never be my taste."
But it was a gift.  From my dad.  Made from the skin of deer he hunted.

So I kept keeping it.  Since college or something - always tucked away, in a closet, waiting.
And know what?  I'm glad I kept it.  Yesterday I realized that I like it a lot, and I'm going to use it.

Backpack.

salty

Oh, and I also saw Salt, which was the boringest but most explodingest movie I saw all week.
Like, she's a spy, but a good spy, or wait - is she a bad spy?  Everyone is spies!  Kaboom!

The good thing about the movies is that there's just new ones, every week.  So you don't run out.

straps and locks

I have these funny old wooden shoes.  One strap broke.

Someone recommended Superior (at 15 and Spruce), and they fixed it up so quick, and really cheap, and now the old leather is really sturdy.  Like new.   If your shoes were broken, I'd tell you to go there too.

Now that we're exchanging ideas and recommendations, who can tell me where to go to get long hair?  Only one person has made an actual suggestion (which I'm going to investigate), but I'd really like to hear from someone who's had it done someplace in the city!

Long hair, I can tell you're just around the corner, but I don't know where to find you, or how much you'll cost.  Or if I'll hate you.  But I'm willing to try it out.

100 ways

After a really long time of procrasti-shopping, I finally got this dress.  I mostly feel dumb that it took me so long - this could have been Summer Dress 2008 - present.  It's probably not for everyone, but for me it's like wearing a longer, more complicated version of the t-shirt I wear to bed every night, which is SO COMFORTABLE.

As usual, a begrudging "good job, American Apparel, you did okay, I guess".

linds

Gotta mail these things to someone.

noodles

Here, a frozen lunch review:

I've had this job for 3 1/2 years.  Every day, the mail comes wrapped in a rubberband.  I made this ball.

Doesn't it look a lot like my Healthy Choice Grilled Chicken Marinara?

Enough said.

predatory

We just keep going to the movies (why not?).

Predators was:
Adrien Brody as hero
some other girl as Anna Lucia
that boy from that 70's show?
all the sets (and the soundtrack) from LOST (reduce, reuse, recycle?)
all the clicking alien talking from District 9

It was pretty funny and the predators were scary looking, so...I liked it enough that it made me kind of want to see/re-see the old ones.   I'm having a little bit of a hard time working out the chronology though - Predator, Predator 2, Aliens V Predator (does that even count?  And does that count at all toward the Alien franchise?), Alien V Predator, Predators?
I've seen bits, but not sure which.  Anybody want to offer insight on what's worthwhile?

breaking 100

It wasn't even me this time, but someone wrote a letter to Pinsetter, and got us a free bowling party that was an absolute dream.  I couldn't even imagine a better weeknight.
Bowling.  Shoes.  Blacklights.  A hundred appetizers for dinner.  Balloons.  Giant ice cream sundaes.  Pint glasses that glowed in the dark (kind of).

I can't say enough good things about this place.  It was like being at North Bowl* but only with people you like.

(Imagine pictures from Kim's fancy new camera here).

I've really dropped the (bowling) ball about letters, but maybe should pump out a few more before the summer (and my life) is over.

*Without the photobooth and Deer Hunter.  But other than that: awesome.

incepted

This "review" is probably only a tiny bit pertinent, and only to people who don't know about Inception yet.

I was an intern at Warner Brothers, and I worked on the lot for this little (as in...six employees) production company, Weed Road.  Sometimes, when they were getting too many scripts in, they'd send me home with a couple, and I was supposed to write coverage.
A big part of it was saying that Movie A (which you'd be reading, and hadn't been made  yet, and would probably never be made) was a mix of Movie B and C.  Like, for instance, "Dog Cop" is a mix of "Kindergarten Cop" and "All Dogs Go to Heaven" or whatever, and then you'd write a page or two about why it was ridiculous for a dead cop's body to enter a dog, who could then talk, but only to his dead partner, and that no one should produce the movie and no one will see it, and there's no chance of fixing it: pass.  Or sometimes, it would seem really good, and you'd give it the a-ok and pass it on to the next person.
So, kind of like that, I'll say Inception was a mix of Matrix and Waking Life.  And Vanilla Sky? And Shutter Island.  And Titanic (just kidding). Thankfully it's missing whatever made the Matrix's action sequences so boring, and whatever made every character in Waking Life so irritating.
It's a heisty plot (which I love), but the heist is a vehicle for all these ideas about dreaming, and the giant philosophical question of "What Is Real?".   It was way more intellectually stimulating than some other dream movies that you see - I think because they didn't take the annoying hippie or horror route.   I mean, I didn't see the new Freddy movie, but that's the whole thing right?  Something about him getting you through your dreams?  Boring.
In Inception, we've got a whole team of super smart people who lay it out simple enough for us to understand (nevermind the technology part, which we're just meant to assume is totally possible).  There's a few different ideas - you can share dreams, dreams are architecturally malleable,  you can choose if you want to stay in it, and then, this up-in-the-air ending jawn that we've seen from Leo most recently in Shutter Island.  There's all these maze-y historical and art references that are a little gimmicky but fun to look for.
It was great.  The CGI was great.  I had pretzel bites, and they too were great.  This is getting rambly.
I'd see it again in a second.

Also I saw Despicable Me, which was better than most other kid's movies I've seen in a long time, including Snow Dogs.  Two trips to the Riverview, but as you all know: it was so hot.

nook

Just so everyone knows, I'm not living for real at that fancy house I posted earlier.  That's where I've been dog/house-sitting.  No Libs.  It's been real, but that part is almost over.

In real life though, we are moving - leaving Oxford.  In slow motion.  This weekend, at real new house (which is on Lehigh, and if you can't quite figure it out, it's near Applebee's?  Does that help?), I scoped out new room.  It's at the tippity top of the house, it's pretty big, it's green, and it has this nook:

The nook is about a 30" cube, is pretty high up in the air (not super accessible) and has it's own outlet.  I'm really perplexed about what to do with it.  Ideas?

I'm over tv (in fact it got curbed and re-homed a couple days ago), so, not super interested in a tv nook. Anyone have a brilliant idea?  So far, I like a tiny version of Philadelphia with a cat bed hidden inside so Matt leBlanc looks like a monster up there.   I'm not sure if he'll go someplace he's supposed to though - you know:  cats
Also taking ideas about colors...

A lot of other big plans for this house.  Whole new blog soon.

peek

Here's a peek into this house where I'm staying.  It's so so far from anything I'm used to.
Kind of the worst pictures (camera-phoney), but hopefully you get the idea.

The top picture is the chandelier over the tub, and the bottom picture should show the peacock ceiling mural?

Anyway, it's funny to live in a place where you're so surrounded by things that aren't your taste, you know?  It's not bad (and, the price is totally right) - but it's just kind of funny.  I guess it'd be like becoming someone's CraigsList roommate.  You wouldn't know what you'd be getting into, and then it seems like you'd just be living around their stuff all the time?

Speaking of CraigsL1ist.  We just bought a big table from guy in Media.  It all worked out, but wow.  People from CL are pretty consistently weirdos, huh?

Back at the farm (the Oxford farm, which isn't a farm at all):
No, you can't come swimming.  At least not today.  (Keep your eyes open for an invite though.  Your internet eyes.  It'll involve movies, sports, swimming and so many foods).

nails

A little gross, I guess.

Starting thinking about this weekend, and kind of hoping it's like last weekend, which was really fun. And funny.  Smelly boys in photobooths and magicians who buy a hundred drinks*?  Hope so.

*Way better than house parties that charge $5 at 3am when the bands are already over and are out of everything.  Really, guys?  Pass.

lashes

Far* from home this week, and working on some little paintings.

*not that far.  House/dog sitting in No Libs for a minute.

a little lupine

A lesson I learned this week regarding the body temperature of magical creatures:

I got a text from Marilyn, asking if I wanted to go to Eclipse with her.  I thought it meant a bar in Old City.
Wrong.
Twilight movie #3. (Teenage) vampires, werewolves.  No review for this - I don't think I'd convince fans it was dumb or haters that it wasn't.  There were a lot of funny parts.

This weekend was a new episode of TrueBlood*, with Southern vampires and werewolves.  (My favorite part of this season is the artwork on the set of the wolf club - take note of it if you can!)

Then yesterday, I started watching this show, the Gates?  Secret suburban vampires.  And werewolves (I think).  Some of them teenagers.  It was pretty bad, and I probably won't watch it again, because I obviously have enough fang-out in my life.

All this to say, I ended up a little confused about actual vampire lore because each imaginary world has their own peculiarities.  I learned one thing for sure:  werewolves are hot.  Not like "hott" (although sometimes),  but hot like really warm.  Wolf blood (or something).  Which is why they don't always wear shirts, and why girls sometimes like our lupine friends more than (cold) vampires.

* if I had to choose one set of undead to follow, it'd be Sookie and the gang for sure.

iMac

Went computer shopping.   First I got talked out of buying the cheapest computer from Walmart - the "E(lectronic) Machine".
Instead I got the second low-est end model from Best Buy.  A laptop!  A Compaq, like college, guys!
So anyway, out with the old, right?
(disregard the following, someone is all over this)
I would love to not have this heavy machine in my life anymore - I can't think of a reason to have two computers.  Does anyone want to trade it for a case of fancy beer or something?  (Or, better yet: help moving?)

disclaimers: It's kind of dusty.   Also, I inherited it from a 7 year old 2 years ago, so I'm not really sure what all it's been through, but it works!  Has speakers/keyboard/mouse, and some sweet party mixes on iTunes*.  Not 100% sure what's up with the DVD player.

I have to try and take about a billion photographs off it (and save them someplace?) so I might need a few days before I'm ready to part ways.  But if you're interested, get in touch!

*can I save these?

fan

Almost every day, I think about this one P Diddy interview I read once (years ago), where he said he didn't use towels, but just has a lot of fans that blow him dry.

All kinds of luxurious.

drugstore cowgirl

Oh really, People of Facebook?  You're hot?  No way.
Maybe you should follow suit and pizza party in the coldest place you can think of.

Today maybe a couple product reviews.  I'll be brief.  And know that these are unsponsored as can be (one of my least favorite things is blogs that try to sneak in innocent-type product placement but are for real getting checks from the man.  Not that I wouldn't accept checks from the man, but don't ever expect me to be clandestine about it.  Or anything, really.)

This Bandaid Stuff.

It is awesome.  It's something like between chapstick/deoderant dispenser, but dispenses something just as magical as the former(s).  Anti-friction barrier.  Twist it up, rub it on, and tada!  Invisible Bandaid.  Really good on shoes when they're rubbing on you the wrong way (because your feet are sweaty, and let's be honest, everyone's feet are sweaty lately).
[Girls: this is also super good when you're wearing the skirt and your legs are so sweaty, and things get a little chaffey.  Seriously.   It's too hot for leggings.  Also good if you're wearing a short skirt and your sweaty bare legs keep rubbing on your bike seat....is that too gross to talk about?  I'm mostly trying to say that this product is a Problem Solver].
Real name:  Band-Aid Friction Block.  About $6, from the pharmacy, tiny (like a box of floss?) and therefore portable.  Thumbs up.

Biore nose strips

I think we (at least the girls) remember high school, and seeing a billion ads of girls using pore strips and being so sicked out but impressed by the blackheads that came off some girl's nose.  Right?
So I decided to try them - the CVS brand, which is $2 less than the Real Deal.  It was just like the ad.  I don't feel like I have a super black-heady nose to start with, but just thought maybe I would be surprised.  So, you get your face wet, put this jawn on, wait for it to dry, then peel it off.   So many tiny black volcanoes are stuck to this thing after!  I couldn't even believe it!  It was like an underwater cave with a million stalagmites staring back at me.
But then, I tried it out again, maybe a week later, and....boring.   Nothing especially noteable came out of my nose - it seemed like I'd really solved the whole thing at one shot.  So maybe I'll save the rest and do it annually or something.

Real name: Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips.  About $5-7 depending on brand loyalty.   A shrug, instead of thumbs up or down.

In other news, I pulled off my eyelashes (the extensions) while at Honeoye.  Already miss them, and might get them again soon, although perhaps in a less ostentatious length (so small, instead of medium).

wannamacy

I know everyone in the world (my world) hates the old Wannamaker Macy's in Center City.
I don't care.
It's my favorite.

It's in between work and everywhere I need to go, and it's air conditioned, and old fashioned, and fancy, and they have a giant bronze eagle sculpture, and they have a pipe organ concert every day at lunch.

Macy's?  I like you.

Texas, AC

It's been a while since I cringed and covered my eyes at a movie.  The Killer Inside Me was a great idea as far as getting into some air conditioning (seriously: freezing in there), but a bad idea as far as not watching girls get hit a lot.  Does that make sense?

Baby Affleck plays "Lou Ford" - this small-town sheriff who is just the scariest kind of psycho.  It was one of these crime to cover a crime to cover a crime things, and it was brutal.  Punch punch punch punch punch.  Aside from the whole brutal end of things though, it was kind of like a great episode of something on the biography channel, or First Person or something.  Like if the movie was the whole reenactment of the serial killer's kills, but the reenactment was great and not corny at all.
There was an internal monologue, which can go either way, and is perhaps overused in the criminally-insane genre, but it was pretty okay  here - the Texas accent was almost too thick to handle but pretty convincing.  The sets and period clothes and everything were all pretty fun to watch too - it was like seeing what was going on in not NYC during Mad Men.

Ben read the book, and said he loved it.  That made sense.  So:  there's my least helpful review.  See it if you have the stomach for it.

M-90 Shamalan

A bunch of us went to my family's place in Honeoye, NY for the weekend. Fourth of July!  Mostly it was great to have no agenda for days, other than grill some food and build a fire.  I'll put some pictures on the 'book.

Highlights tour
boats
hotdog boats
bonfires
waterskiers
ball
2 nights of fireworks
grilled everything
sleeping outside
swimming
a white skunk (in a British accent)
badmitton
playing cards on breezy days
funny tents
coming home in my new ride
and probably 100 other things.

The best/worst part was when Ryan threw his glasses into the fire, woke up and said "I threw my glasses into the fire".  Then told his mom "I or someone, knocked my glasses into the fire."
